Where I come from, it is believed that a peek into the refrigerator always reveals a little bit of the owner’s personality. If you can discern personality types based on leftovers, that is. But seriously, for me, the fridge is one appliance where innovation is all welcome. Especially if it is so unique and promising as the cool stackable Flatshare Fridges designed by Stefan Buchberger, a student at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Secret slide reveals Microsoft will lose $300 million on Yahoo deal before making $1

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave a little more information to financial analysts than perhaps he planned. There are two versions of his slide presentation — one with a slide he didn’t present this morning. I downloaded the PowerPoint file, and then noticed it had disappeared from Microsoft’s investor website. That was so Microsoft could remove the errant, and quite revealing, slide.

Firefox will surpass 1 billion downloads by this weekend

Firefox LogoMozilla is counting down as Firefox rapidly approaches its billionth download of all time.

Firefox 1.0 launched in November 2004 as the secure, open source alternative to market dominating Internet Explorer, which held nearly 90% market share at the time. One year later, Firefox had already attained 10% browser share. Since mid 2008, Firefox has held nearly 30% of the market, while Internet Explorer has dropped to around 60%.

The state of Microsoft’s Business and Server & Tools divisions

Microsoft FAMStephen Elop and Bob Muglia delivered two of the more difficult presentations during Microsoft’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting. Elop runs the Business division, which had been a consistent performer until fiscal fourth quarter, when revenue fell 13 percent year over year. Server and Tools did better, but still took a revenue hit in fourth quarter.

Whoever came up with the proverb “Use your enemy’s hand to catch a snake” (apparently Persian in origin) was pretty damn smart. And must’ve caught a lot of snakes too. Jokes apart, this is exactly what the Dutch have invented in their long quest to ward off the danger of rising tides – a new construction project called “New Water” which has created “The Citadel”, an apartment complex completely built on water.

LG hooks up Vudu with Netflix, YouTube

The streaming-enhanced device market may still be dominated by Netflix, but video on demand service Vudu continues to fight its way into the picture. Today, the company announced its partnership with South Korean company LG will put Vudu directly on connected HDTVs.

Vudu debuted its own streaming set top box nearly two years ago, and managed to be one of the first companies to pump out HD streams. Though it had partnerships with such companies as Sharp and Best Buy, the streaming service remained within Vudu’s own hardware.

Windows 7 Ultimate cracked already

Even though it’s been In the hands of OEMs for barely a week and has not even made it to general availability yet, Windows 7 has already been cracked.

The crack can reportedly be built on Lenovo’s Windows 7 Ultimate OEM DVD .ISO that was leaked to a Chinese forum. Using the leaked .ISO, the OEM-SLP product key and activation certificates can be obtained through the boot.wim.

Palm Pre can’t help Sprint from losing $384 million and 257k subscribers, but prepaid is booming

Boost Mobile logoSprint, the United States’ third largest mobile phone network operator reported its second quarter earnings today, showing a total loss of 4 million, and 257,000 subscribers. For Sprint, these numbers actually represent a minor improvement.

In the past two years, Sprint’s number of subscriptions has dropped by more than 7 million, or roughly one million subscribers per quarter. This quarter Sprint lost 991,000 contract subscribers, but coupled it with the biggest gain in prepaid customers from any U.S. mobile carrier in three years (more than 777,000).
