Wireless charging? Yes, please. Where do I sign up? Being an iPhone user, I have yet to get my hands on a WildCharge wireless charging dock for iPhone. But, it looks like I may not have to wait for WildCharge to get my magnetically-induced charging fix, if Duracell has anything to say about it. The battery maker has just announced their Duracell myGrid wireless charging pad for power-cord haters with compatible handsets.

Duracell’s myGrid looks a lot like the WildCharge wireless charging station. But, then again, both charging pads do the same thing – they induce electrical currents via magnetic fields and some sort of magic. With the power of magnetic fields and pixie dust, the Duracell myGrid can juice-up multiple mobile phones at the same time. Custom-made adapters plug into the cellphone and route wireless power from the myGrid to the phone’s charging port. The whole thing makes for a really convenient way to charge your handset.

But, wait a minute. As cool as wireless charging sounds, there’s a downside. The Duracell system is still limited to working with clip-on adapters that add unsightly bulk to a phone. The WildCharge system also requires an adapter. So, while technically wireless, there’s still the need to use an adapter to draw power from the charging pad. Until mobile phone makers adopt a common wireless charging technology, we’re going to have to deal with wireless charging “adapters.” Not that we wouldn’t mind having that problem.
