HP makes major push in Hybrid cloud services

HP makes major push in Hybrid cloud services

IT solutions leader Hewlett-Packard has been very deliberate about its belief in Hybrid cloud solutions; that is, solutions that integrate public and private cloud solutions into a single, more controlled package. It was one of the top three company priorities erstwhile CEO Leo Apotheker outlined earlier this year, for which the company has set aside $2 billion in financing.

Forget analysts and pundits: Apple’s best days are ahead

Forget analysts and pundits: Apple's best days are ahead

Have investors, analysts, and pundits lost their minds? Reading some recent Apple analysis you could make that case. The company is still wildly successful financially, yet perusing the news sites and the blogs will make you think the company is in some danger of failure. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

There is too much focus on the present, take for example Apple’s most recent quarterly results. The Cupertino company had its second best quarter ever, yet investors focused on analysts sky-high expectations. Apple paid for it, and still hasn’t recovered two weeks later.

Adobe stiffs Apple

Adobe stiffs Apple

Android tablets got what can only be described as their greatest endorsement to date, with stunning support from one of the world’s largest and most successful software developers. Today at its MAX 2011 conference, Adobe unveiled the suite of six Touch Apps, which will be available for Android tablets in November. There is no ETA for iPad, except announcement planned for 2012. Considering how much better iPad is selling than Android tablets, Adobe’s choice can’t be meaningfully described. The developer has chosen the lower-volume competitor instead of the overwhelming leader.

2017: When PCs go the way of the dinosaur?

2017: When PCs go the way of the dinosaur?

Today, In-Stat predicted that the global tablet market will reach 250 million shipments by 2017. It’s a seemingly big number, but its real significance is bigger: How much will tablets displace PC sales?

Right now the global install base of PCs is about 1 billion units. Shipments have been above 300 million PCs per year, but they’re way down in mature markets, still strong in some emerging markets and losing sales to tablets, according to both Gartner and IDC. Is there market sustainable enough for 300 million PCs and 250 million tablets? I’m the wrong person to answer, having already proclaimed — to the chagrin of many Betanews commenters — that the “PC era is over.”

IDC: Samsung smartphone shipments grew 439% in Q4 2010

Smartphones Q4 2010

I’m in a contrary mood. While everyone else is obsessing about iPhone and Research in Motion smartphone shipments, I’m singling out HTC and Samsung, which combined fourth-quarter performance foreshadows changes coming to the global smartphone market. Earlier today, IDC released Q4 and full-year 2010 smartphone shipments. Sidebar: For those folks still obsessing about¬†Strategy Analytics tablet data, IDC likewise measures shipments into the channel. For actual sales — that is to ¬†customers — Gartner will soon deliver them.

It’s official, iPad sapped Windows PC shipments during Q4 2010, but Macs more

It's official, iPad sapped Windows PC shipments during Q4 2010, but Macs more

By Joe Wilcox, Betanews

Gartner and IDC both released fourth-quarter PC shipments this afternoon (PC here refers to Windows computers and Macs). While they didn’t agree on the actual numbers or year-over-year growth, both analyst firms cited iPad and other media tablets (What? There are others?) as displacing PC sales. Well, hell, no wonder every Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane with a manufacturing plant, or the funds to outsource one, showed off a tablet during last week’s Consumer Electronics Show.

It’s the question of the morning, with Verizon possibly announcing iPhone on its network in about an hour. Verizon has planned a mysterious 11 am ET press briefing in New York — a venue that is sure to please Wall Street analysts and investors. But for all the rumors and speculation about if or when the real question is: Will you buy Verizon iPhone? Would you switch from another carrier for Verizon iPhone? More significantly, would you give up iPhone on AT&T to get it? Please answer in comments or e-mail joewilcox at gmail.com.

Machead John Gruber and I often don’t agree on much. We’ve had some fairly public spats over the years, regarding Apple. But for once, we do agree on something. “This must be a mistake,” he says about a report dated today from Wall Street Journal asserting that at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show Microsoft will unveil a version of Windows for low-powered chips, “though it isn’t expected to be available for two years.” Two years? Two years is three years too late.

Market research firm Gartner has named Samsung Mobile both the top mobile phone manufacturer in the United states, and the top seller of Android Smartphones as well. In less than one year, Samsung has gone from having practically no Android phones in the U.S. market to outselling the market’s early entrants HTC and Motorola.
