Windows Phone 7 lamely targets ‘life maximizers’
Thursday, March 18, 2010 0:21 No Comments
As if the term “Windows Phone 7 Series” wasn’t lame enough, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is pushing its latest operating system at “life maximizers.”
Samsung have a smartphone with a 3D display?
Thursday, March 18, 2010 0:21 No CommentsWell yes, if the rumours are to be believed! TechDigest picked up on a story that came from Samsung Hub, regarding the SCH-W960 – apparently this device can do 3D via its screen, and not only that, can up-convert from 2D to 3D (now I think I’ve heard it all!). The device is apparently packing a 3.3 inch WVGA AMOLED screen, which is 3D capable – along with a comparably less impressive 3MP in the camera department. One other trump card it does have to play though is dual TV tuners – quite what standard really isn’t very clear though.
Apple’s HTC patent lawsuit is a bluff
Monday, March 15, 2010 2:20 No CommentsBy Joe Wilcox, Betanews
Now that buzz about Apple’s patent lawsuit against HTC has quieted a bit, I’m ready to pipe in with some contrarian analysis. I agree with other pundits suggesting that the lawsuit is competition by litigation, where Apple hopes to scare off mobile manufacturers from licensing Android. Surely some handset manufacturers will pull back, but they would be foolish to do so. For other existing and potential Android licensees, the lawsuit is a get out of jail free card. Apple’s patent case should embolden, not restrain them. There may never be a better time to license Android than now.
Flash 10.1 limited to specific hardware standards, excludes early Android smartphones

Can’t wait to get Flash 10.1 on your smartphone? Well, the case may not be in your favor if you’re carrying around a first generation Android phone. Even if your device is still up to snuff today, it’s said that the new version of flash will only support specific processors.
Microsoft Windows Phone 7 upgrades to be determined by OEMs
Thursday, February 25, 2010 14:20 No Comments
There’s nothing worse than plunking down a wad of cash and investing some emotional currency into a shiny new Windows Mobile smartphone, only to have it become nearly obsolete a few months later when Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s new Windows Phone 7 Series comes rolling through town. Microsoft knows this, and they’re apparently going to allow certain handsets to be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 at some point after the mobile OS’s launch later this year. The only catch? It’ll be up to Windows Phone OEMs to determine if they want to spend the extra cash in licensing and porting Windows Phone 7 to work with existing hardware.
Microsoft allows Windows Mobile apps to be installed on memory cards (take that, iPhone)
Thursday, February 25, 2010 14:20 No Comments
Windows Phone 7 Series captured everyone’s attention when Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) unveiled the more consumer-friendly smartphone platform destined to succeed the mobile OS dinosaur we know as Windows Mobile 6.5, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft is going hands-off on Windows Mobile just yet. Seeing as how Windows Mobile still has several more months to go before getting one-upped by Windows Phone 7, Microsoft apparently thought it prudent to make their Windows Marketplace for Mobile a little more appealing. Windows Mobile apps from the Marketplace can now be installed directly on memory cards.

Rogers to Launch Acer Liquid E
Monday, February 22, 2010 16:20 No Comments
Rogers (NYSE: RCI) has just announced an exclusive on the Acer Liquid E, an updated version of the Android-powered Liquid that was announced last fall. We got some playtime with the Liquid E at Mobile World Congress, and thought it would make a fine answer to the top-tier Android smartphones that we’re seeing from the more established manufacturers, if possibly aiming to undercut them on price.
Handmark’s TweetCaster launched for Android
Saturday, January 30, 2010 8:20 No Comments
After the BlackBerry version, Handmark has launched TweetCaster for the Android platform. The popular Twitter client exists in two versions: regular which “costs” a tweet, and the Pro which sells for .99.
Feature wise, TweetCaster supports multiple Twitter accounts, retweets, Twitter lists, push notifications, URL shortening with previews, photo attachments, threaded direct messaging, font and theme customization.
As expected, latest Android smartphones equipped with WVGA screens such as the MOTO DROID and Nexus One perfectly sing along the app!
New wave of outages impacts the plagued Google phone
Saturday, January 30, 2010 8:20 No CommentsBy Scott M. Fulton, III, Betanews
Since early Friday morning, as hundreds of commenters on T-Mobile’s and Google’s support forums are reporting, 3G data connectivity service has been completely unavailable — for some, since approximately 4:30 am Eastern Time this morning, but for a great many more users beginning at 10:00 am. Some users in recent minutes are reporting service restored, although indications from both forums are that service can come back and go away again.
