Leading PC chipmaker Intel announced this week that its third generation Atom mobile processor, formerly code-named “Cedar Trail” is now available, and that systems using the platform will be available in early 2012.

Though Intel is concentrating on “ultrabooks” (i.e. thin and light notebooks with at least a 10″ screen) as the latest growth platform for PCs, the company is not letting netbooks disappear just yet; and these Atom chips are smaller and less power consumptive.

Crazy: Android is coming to Intel processors

Crazy: Android is coming to Intel processors

Intel and Google jointly announced on Tuesday that future versions of Android will offer support for Intel’s Atom mobile processor family, meaning Android will finally make the jump from being ARM-exclusive, to also supporting x86.

The x86 instruction set has historically been used only in computers that run desktop operating systems, and the reduced instruction set ARM has been used in devices that run mobile operating systems.

Chipmaker Intel Corp. has posted its earnings for the second quarter of 2010, and with revenue of .8 billion and a net income of .9 billion, declared it to have been the company’s best quarter ever.

Strong demand from corporate customers for our most advanced microprocessors helped Intel achieve the best quarter in the company’s 42-year history,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. “Our process technology lead plus compelling architectural designs increasingly differentiate Intel-based products in the marketplace. The PC and server segments are healthy and the demand for leading-edge technology will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.”
