Yahoos mobile division set for exponential growth

YahooYahoo expects its mobile division to grow “exponentially,” even as the overall market is only starting to emerge from recession. In that sense, the company is focused on boosting the number of mobile users as a way to attract more advertisers, Hilary Schneider, Yahoo North America’s executive VP said at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York.

She went on to add: “If you just look at the growth rates on mobile, they’re incredible, they’re extraordinary, but you have to just remember that they’re starting with a small base. I really do believe that over the next five years you’ll start to see material dollars begin to migrate.”

However, Schneider also warned that the large number of mobile devices, formats, networks and standards are complicating things, though I don’t see those as unsolvable issues.

The question in my mind is – for how long Yahoo can compete with Google (NSDQ: GOOG)? They can certainly make some cash to pay the bills, but their long-term prospects seem blurry… Any thoughts?
